Under The Table
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Edinburgh’s New Town, Under The Table is exactly the kind of gem you want to stumble upon-and never stop talking about. Located at 3A1 Dundas St, this intimate restaurant offers a memorable dine-in experience that marries French-Italian culinary elegance with an effortlessly cool atmosphere.
From the moment you step inside, the vibe is clear: Under The Table isn’t trying to shout for your attention. It already has it. There's no delivery, no takeaway-just good old-fashioned sit-down meals, and honestly, that’s the charm. It’s the kind of place where conversations stretch longer, glasses clink gently, and dessert always deserves a second look.
Let’s talk food, because that’s where Under The Table really makes its name.
Their Onion Soup sets the tone-rich, deep, subtly sweet with that perfectly browned cheese crust on top. You’d expect it from a Parisian bistro, not from a low-key spot in Edinburgh. But here it is, and it’s divine.
Prefer something refreshing? Go for the Salmon Carpaccio. Lightly cured, beautifully plated, and paired with just the right touch of citrus and herbs, it’s a starter that wakes up the palate and promises more good things ahead.
You’ll find no boring entrees here. The Duck Breast is a particular favorite-tender, pink, and paired with seasonal vegetables that actually taste like something. Then there’s the Braised Beef Cheeks with Whipped Polenta, which deserves a standing ovation. Melt-in-the-mouth beef meets silky polenta, with hints of coffee in the background that somehow work better than you’d imagine. This is comfort food with a twist.
Seafood lovers aren’t left out either. The Sea Bass-crispy skin, moist flesh, simple seasoning-is served the way it should be. No fuss, just finesse. Want something playful? The Parma Ham Mango & Chilli Salsa offers a sweet-spicy punch that's as bold as it is refreshing.
Don’t sleep on the French Fries. Sounds ordinary, but here they’re golden, crisped to perfection, and generously salted. Paired with a glass from their excellent wine list, it’s proof that even the most humble dish can feel elevated.
For those with a love for continental indulgence, the Bottarga-a salty, briny cured fish roe-is used sparingly but smartly in pastas or salads, giving a rich umami punch that lingers beautifully.
Desserts at Under The Table aren’t just an afterthought. They’re the main event for many. The Tiramisu is unapologetically decadent-layers of mascarpone and espresso-soaked sponge, finished with a heavy dusting of cocoa. Pure comfort in a glass.
Prefer something French? The Îles Flottantes (Floating Islands) are light-as-air meringue clouds resting in crème anglaise. Then there’s the Tarte Tatin, buttery and caramelized, or the classic Flan-each one showing just how seriously this restaurant takes its sweets.
And yes, their coffee is the kind you linger over. Strong, aromatic, and perfect as an endnote-or even a mid-meal interlude.
Their curated wine list deserves praise. Whether you’re into bold reds or crisp whites, there’s a bottle (or glass) that’ll match your meal perfectly. They also serve beer, spirits, and of course, healthy options if you're looking to balance out that dessert.
Solo diners looking for a relaxed lunch? Absolutely. Couples chasing an intimate dinner spot? Even better. Friends out to toast the end of the week? You’ll find them laughing over wine here, too.
Under The Table may not scream for attention, but once you’ve eaten here, it’ll stay with you. This is where passion for food meets respect for the dining experience. And if you ask around, that’s exactly what keeps people coming back.
